"Knocking Girls Down" to Premiere at Sidewalk Moving Picture Fest

Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival -
Saturday, August 27th, 2011 -
8:45 p.m. at Alabama Power Auditorium –

Remember Roller Derby? It’s back. There are 200 women’s roller derby leagues in the US. Most of them are less than 5 years old. And who are the skaters?  You might be surprised.  On Birmingham’s Tragic City Rollers roster there’s a librarian working on a master’s degree, an RN at Children’s hospital, and a Metro police officer who’s also a mom.  They talk about sisterhood, self-actualization, and the satisfaction of a good smack well-delivered. This documentary follows a season with the team on and off the track to discover not only how the game is played, but why.

A documentary by Mike Letcher and Nick Rymer

"Songs Inside The Box," the cigar box guitar documentary has been selected for screening at the Prometheus Film Festival of York, Pennsylvania.  The festival will take place in the York Little Theatre on August 19th and 20th, one week before York will host the annual Pennsylvania Cigar Box Guitar Festival.

We're very proud to have the film screening in York because it is the home of Shane Speal, the self-proclaimed King of the Cigar Box Guitar and central figure of "Songs Inside the Box."  Shane will be performing at the festival.

And the Emmy Goes to...Oil Spill

Discovering Alabama: Oil Spill received two regional Emmy awards from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in Atlanta this past Saturday, June 20th. Last year, the long-running series known for celebrating the natural wonders of Alabama won its first Emmy for Discovering Alabama: Space. Although not a news-oriented series, when the oil began spewing into the Gulf of Mexico,  it was impossible to ignore the long term questions that left many wondering about the impact. Time has passed. News crews have moved on to new stories. Yet this documentary reminds us that this story is far from over. Natural history doesn't have the luxury to just forget.
