Discovering Alabama: Sunday on Alabama Public TV beginning at 8 PM

Bats

Various species of that unique flying mammal, bats, can be found in Alabama.  Several, such as the Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus) and the Big Yellow Bat (Lasiurus intermedius) are considered imperiled due to declining populations.  This program follows a team of bat scientists on a research expedition into Alabama’s Bankhead National Forest to study the habits and ecological status of bats.  Included are expert assessments of the special capabilities of bats and their important role in the natural environment.

Alabama Allure

Since 1985, Discovering Alabama has been bringing you the wild wonders of our state. And since 2005, we’ve been bringing you those wonders in glorious high definition. But there’s only so much of this magnificent footage we can fit into a regular show, so for this special addition, we’re going to kick back, add some beautiful music, and enjoy the unique allure of Alabama.

Author Barry Hannah dies at 67

I was among the dwarves over in Alabama at the school, where almost everybody dies early. There is a poison in Tuscaloosa that draws souls towards the low middle. Hardly anybody has honest work. Queers full of backbiting and rumors set the tone. Nobody has ever missed a meal. Everybody has about exactly enough courage to jaywalk or cheat a wife or friend with a quote from Nietzsche on his lips.

Barry Hannah, “Ride, Fly, Penetrate, Loiter” in Captain Maximus

Barry Hannah, "the Dean of Southern literature," wasn't much on interviews. His earlier life had been tempestuous and he'd grown tired of living down the stories of revelry and excess. But in what is perhaps Hannah's last interview, he consented to talk with his longtime friend, Bookmark host, Don Noble. To watch the interview click here.

Glimpse

Whose hobby is cruising the Bahamas dressed up like Otis from the Andy Griffith show? Who is a little bit Erin Brokavich, a little bit Norma Rae? Whose commercial on youtube site took more hits than Muhammad Ali, and after being on The Ellen Show, became a trash youtube hit? You'll get a Glimpse on our new series. With two shows in production, Glimpse hopes to combine southern and story in every way you've imagined. And even ways you haven't.
